‘Yellow alert’ raised over Visayas on Tuesday due to limited power supply

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert for two time blocks today, August 5—from 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. and from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. —due to thinning power reserves.

As of 7 a.m., the available capacity on the grid stood at 2,889 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is expected to reach 2,489 MW.

The yellow alert was prompted by the forced outages of 12 power plants between April and August this year, and six other plants that have remained offline since 2023. Additionally, eight plants are running on derated capacity, leading to a total of 744 MW currently unavailable to the Visayas grid.

The NGCP identified two main factors behind the alert status: significant number of generating units are either on unplanned outages or running below optimal capacity and rising electricity demand in the region.

A yellow alert is issued when the system’s operating margin is insufficient to meet the required contingency reserve, although this does not yet mean rotating power interruptions. However, it signals a tight power situation.

Meanwhile, the Luzon and Mindanao grids remain under normal condition.

The NGCP continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to conserve energy, especially during peak hours.

MANILA, Philippines – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert on Tuesday—the second alert issued this week—due to the increase in demand, with some power plants suffering outages.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert would be in place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Under a yellow alert, there is still enough supply in the grid to meet demand, but that there will be power interruptions in case a plant breaks down.

In the case of the Visayas grid, the NGCP said available capacity was 2,889 megawatts (MW), while the peak demand was pegged at 2,489 MW.

The Luzon and Mindanao grids, on the other hand, are under normal condition.
