TALIBON, BOHOL — Six fishermen were apprehended early Thursday morning, July 24, for engaging in illegal fishing activities in the municipal waters off Bansahan Sag, Talibon.

The suspects, all residents of Barangay Calituban, were identified as:Melvin Abaño, 29; Bryan Querbo, 24; Ariel Francisco, 28; Robenson Abeña, 28; Ruel Garcia, 42; and Ferdinand Almacin, 43.

The Coastal Law Enforcement Team (CLET) of Talibon caught the fishermen using compressor equipment, a banned method under Municipal Ordinance C-011, known as the Talibon Fisheries Code. The ordinance prohibits destructive fishing practices to protect marine resources.

Seized during the seaborne patrol operation were two fishing pump boats powered by 13HP engines, two compressor units, and around eight kilograms of assorted fish catch.

Following their arrest, the suspects were brought to Garcia Memorial Provincial Hospital for routine physical examination. They later opted for administrative settlement, each paying a fine of P20,000 as provided by local law. The seized equipment, valued at P70,000, and the fish catch worth around P1,600, remain in the custody of the Talibon CLET for proper documentation and disposition.

Local authorities said the operation underscores their firm commitment to enforcing environmental and fisheries laws.

“Protecting our marine resources is essential for sustainable livelihood and environmental conservation,” said a CLET official.

The case is now pending adjudication before the Office of the Municipal Mayor.
