MANILA — A Boholano broadcaster based in Cebu has been honored as Best Radio Newscaster at the 28th Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Golden Dove Awards held Thursday night, June 26, 2025, in Manila.
Jhunnex Gabica Napallacan, a native of Maribojoc, Bohol and station manager of dyLA, received the prestigious national award.
“Who would have thought that this promdi (provincial) broadcaster from a small station could get a national award,” Napallacan wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post following the ceremony.
“Receiving this 28th KBP GOLDEN DOVE award for Best Radio Newscaster is the defining moment of my more than 20-year broadcasting career,” he added.
Napallacan expressed his deep gratitude to his family, colleagues, mentors, and listeners who helped shape his journey in media. He dedicated the award to his parents, Casio and Tering.
“Thank you, Lord. Thank you to my bosses at Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation—President Gerard Seno and Chairman Michael Mendoza—for trusting me, and to the entire ALU-TUCP family,” he said.
He recalled his early days in broadcasting, when Ted Ayeng of DYTR in Tagbilaran City first believed in him and trained him in news writing, interviewing, and newscasting while he was still a fourth-year college student.
“Some of the senior staff laughed at me because I didn’t know what I was doing. Sir Ted sent me old news scripts and told me, ‘Practice reading these at home,’” he shared.
He also credited Leo Lastimosa, Edgar Gutierrez, and the late Baby Camomot of DYRF for inspiring him through their “Kwentas Claras” program. Later, General Manager Cerge Remonde gave him his first big break, along with colleagues Jun Tagalog, Fred Languido, and Dennis Santillan.
Napallacan also thanked News Director Rene Borrowed, Ma’am Marit (GM Cerge’s wife), Roger Vallena, June Perez, and Atty. Ariel Bacatan (former news director), who helped train him at DYRF’s news desk.
“To all my friends, my entire family—especially Nanay Tering and Papa Casio, my siblings and nieces and nephews—I hope I made you proud (tears and popcorn),” he wrote.
He also extended his appreciation to dyLA’s loyal listeners and advertisers, whom he considers an essential part of his success.
