Supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte have held rallies in Bohol to mark his 80th birthday and to protest his detention in The Hague where he faces a charge of crimes against humanity over his deadly war on drugs.
In Tagbilaran City, supporters gathered at Plaza Rizal to pray for Duterte’s good health and release.
At exactly 8 p.m., the supporters sang a birthday song for him.
During the program, Duterte’s son Baste Duterte gave a message through a video.
Duterte supporters also had rallies in Calape, Talibon, Carmen, Alicia and Jagna towns.
“We love him and are very sad for him now,” said Gilbert Sarabia.
He added, ” Bring him home now. “
Some supporters from Baclayon and Panglao towns also joined the rally.
On March 11, Philippine authorities assisted Interpol in serving a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Duterte for crimes against humanity in connection with his drug war.
After his arrest, Duterte was transported to The Hague, Netherlands.
Duterte faces a six-month wait inside the United Nations Scheveningen prison before his next scheduled court appearance on September 23.
