African swine fever (ASF) cases were reported in two barangays in the city, raising concerns over the spread of the virus.

Dr. Carl Pradera, the officer-In-charge (OIC) of the City Agriculture and Veterinary Office, said the affected barangays were Bool and Mansasa.

In Barangay Bool, seven out of ten pigs that had blood samples taken tested positive for ASF in the rapid test.

Meanwhile in Barangay Mansasa, a pig also tested positive.

Pradera said that some pigs died before blood samples were taken from the 10 pigs.

In Bohol, 12 towns and one city have been affected by the disease. These include the towns of San Miguel, Ubay, Batuan, Carmen, Pilar, Trinidad, Bilar, Talibon, Dagohoy, Bien Unido, Panglao and Catigbian.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, whose mortality rate can reach 100 percent.

It is not a danger to human health, but it has devastating effects on pig populations and the farming economy.
