The rainy season is officially here.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) declared the onset of the country’s rainy season on Wednesday, May 29.

In a statement, Pagasa said the occurrence of scattered rain showers, frequent thunderstorms, the passage of Typhoon “Aghon,” and the prevalence of the southwest monsoon or “habagat” over the past few days have brought significant rains over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas, indicating the start of the rainy season in the country.

However, it said there may be breaks in rainfall lasting a few days or weeks, known as “monsoon breaks.”

Despite this, Pagasa warned of a high chance of La Niña conditions developing in July-August-September, potentially leading to above-normal rainfall in some areas of the country, especially at the end of the year.

It advised the public and all concerned agencies to take precautionary measures against the adverse impacts of the rainy season and the impending La Niña, such as floods and rain-induced landslides.
