The municipal government of Loay commemorated on Monday the 459th Sandugo at Barangay Hinawanan in Loay, the original site of the Sanduguan or Blood Compact.
The event marked the Blood Compact, a significant treaty of friendship forged between the Spanish expedition led by Legazpi and the indigenous Filipinos, represented by Datu Sikatuna, on March 25, 1565.
The ceremony took place aboard the flagship San Pedro, anchored off the shores of Hinawanan Bay in Loay, where the symbolic sanduguan, or blood compact, was performed.
The commemoration commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony led by Mayor Hilario Ayuban Jr, Board Member Lucille Lagunay, and officials from LGU Loay. Representing Governor Aris Aumentado, BM Lagunay conveyed the governor’s heartfelt message, underscoring the profound significance of the Sandugo in Bohol’s rich tapestry of history.
The Sandugo serves as a symbol of the Boholanos’ enduring commitment to peace and a testament to the value of friendship and connections.
Despite the challenges that have shaped society over centuries, the spirit of the Sandugo inspires us to preserve our traditions and heritage. As we reflect on this historic pact, let us continue to cherish the bonds that unite us and strive to uphold the principles of peace and cooperation that the Sandugo embodies.
The city government of Tagbilaran commemorated the Sanduguan last March 16.
