The provincial government under Gov. Aris Aumentado successfully organized the first Geopark orientation for members of the Bohol Association of Hotels, Resorts, and Restaurants (Bahrr).

Through the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO) and the Center for Culture and Arts Development (CCAD), the orientation was held March 7 in two venues: at JJ’s Seafood Village for Tagbilaran members and at the Bohol Bee Farm for Panglao members.

The seminar sought to familiarize Bahrr members with the designation of Bohol as the first UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines. Since Bahrr is on the front lines of Bohol’s hospitality industry, it was imperative for them to comprehend the roles of culture and tourism in the context of a geopark.

It also sought to establish shared responsibilities among tourism stakeholders to sustain the prestigious recognition bestowed by UNESCO.

Doer Escoto, Bahrr president, warmly welcomed the participants to the Geopark orientation, pointing to the shared expectation of the provincial government and Bahrr for its members to actively promote Bohol as a geopark, act as living ambassadors in welcoming visitors, and actively engage in environmental preservation efforts.

During the orientation, resident geologist Karl Michael Din of BPEMO elaborated on the geological composition of Bohol and the factors that make it a geopark.

Meanwhile, Gavin Michael Cubillo, project development officer of Center for Culture and Arts Development (Ccad) emphasized the intertwine of culture and nature in geopark management.

Noe Plaza, Best Western Plus front office manager, admitted to being unaware of the geopark designation until the orientation and expressed gratitude for the enlightening session, emphasizing its substantial help to those in the hotel industry who cater to a global audience.

Plaza also recognized the importance of showcasing Bohol and instilling pride among Boholanos and the broader impact of the geopark designation on educating both local and international guests.

Bohol, as a geopark rich in natural and cultural wonders, invites exploration beyond what meets the eye. There is a wealth of stories about its designation and opportunities for everyone to contribute to its preservation.

Aumentado, serving as the chairman of the Geopark Management Council, ensures that while his administration focuses on innovating tourism management for sustainability, the provincial government is committed to developing a resilient and green Bohol while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Bahrr remains steadfast in its commitment to making Bohol a model of environmental stewardship and excellence within the hospitality industry. (PIMO/ML)
