Nine persons, including a town councilor, were arrested by local police after they were caught playing mahjong in Barangay Looc, Jagna on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.

The town councilor who was arrested by police was identified as Pacheco Rances. Other arrested were Eriberto Rañin, 72, married, and a resident of Looc, Jagna; Felix Yray, 51, single, and a resident of Pagina, Jagna; Venusto Caseñas, 60, married, and a resident of Can-upao, Jagna; Wendell Du, 48, married, and a resident of Nausok, Jagna; Conrado Yap, 65, married, and a resident of Canjulao, Jagna; Silvano Bayron, 83, married, and a resident of Pagina, Jagna; Antonio Salazar, 57, married and a resident of Tejero, Jagna; and Ireneo Salas, 47, married, and a resident of Malbog, Jagna.

Confiscated from the nine were sets of mahjong tiles, four dice and cash of gambling proceeds.

Police Major Marcos Lopez, Jagna town police chief, said they initially received information from concerned citizens regarding the rampant alleged mahjong games in Looc village.

Lopez said he and his men immediately responded and upon checking the house, they found the nine, including Rances, playing mahjong.

Lopez said all types of gambling remains prohibited.

Rances and his companions could be facing charges for violating Presidential Decree 1602 which penalizes gambling.

Rances, however, could face additional charges, especially since he is a public official.
