The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Tagbilaran acknowledged the usefulness of generator sets while the province has no electricity but it also cautioned residents on its risks.

On New Year’s day, two children died in Cortes town after a fire gutted their house.

Authorities found that the family placed the generator set inside their house. Someone allegedly lit a candle that caused the generator to explode.

Keep Safe everyone. Everyday is Fire Safety day. God bless,” BFP said.

5 Safety Tips in using Diesel/Gasoline Portable Generators

  1. Always use a Portable Generator in Open Outdoor Spaces.
-Portable generators produce concentrated levels of carbon monoxide which is the most common reason why people die from these engine driven machines.
  2. Keep it DRY
-When you run your portable generator, be sure to keep it dry. When it’s raining, make sure it is properly covered and vented.
  3. Don’t re-FUEL when it’s running or overheating.
-Before refueling your generator, make sure to turn it off and let it cool before pouring the gas in it. The same when you fill up your car’s gasoline tank.
  4. Use your generator outlets properly.
-You can plug your appliances directly into your generator; however, if you’re using an extension cord, make sure it’s rated in watts or amps and is heavy duty.
  5. Avoid feed backing.
-Do not plug your generator directly into an outlet or you might run the risk of electrocuting your neighbors or utility workers. You might also end up frying some of your electronics.

Be safe and be fire safety conscious.
