Two teenagers were severely injured after they were hit by an ambulance in Batuan town on Friday (Oct. 1) afternoon, police said.

Two teenage girls were critically injured Friday (Oct. 1) afternoon when an ambulance hit them as they walked to home on the sidewalk, police said.

According to the Police Staff Sergeant Daryl Yecyec of Batuan Police Station, the incident happened along the national highway in Barangay Rizal, at around 12:45 p.m.

The victims were identified as Roselle Sopil and Mia Baer, both 16 and residents of Rizal village.

Yecyec said the ambulance driven by Jovito Pilongo was on its way back to Antequera town from Ubay where it transported a woman who was about to give birth.

Pilongo told police he fell asleep and lost control and went up onto a sidewalk and hit the teenagers before it slammed into a tree.

Both girls were taken by ambulance to Cong. Simeon G. Toribio Memorial Hospital in Carmen. Police said they were critically injured that they were transfered to another hospital for further treatment.

Pilongo was also taken to a hospital, while his passengers suffered minor injuries.
