The long-awaited “Darna” film is no longer pushing through, ABS-CBN reported on Friday.

The project from Star Cinema starring Jane de Leon has been scrapped because of the film’s big budget and the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement on Friday, August 21, ABS-CBN said the rights remain with ABS-CBN as it decides to postpone the film production indefinitely after careful deliberation on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on movie production and cinemas.

De Leon, who hailed from Barangay Ubujan, Tagbilaran City, posted the official statement of ABS-CBN.

“I am deeply saddened by the “postponement” of the Darna Project, ” she said on Friday, August 21.

“However, safety comes first as always. Maraming salamat po sa lahat ng suporta at pag-unawa. Palagi po tayong magdasal at mag-ingat. God bless! 🙏❤, ” she added.

De Leon was pronounced as the titular character in July 2019.

Pep.ph reported that the sum of P140 million had reportedly been spent and P100 million more was needed to complete the project.

The film experienced delays due to various reasons. Director Erik Matti dropped out in 2018, while Liza Soberano backed out as the lead in April 2019 due to a finger injury.
