The Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH) on Thursday reported a confirmed positive case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a public advisory, GCGMH said it was able “to identify and isolate a patient who turned out to be positive for COVID-19 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)”.

GCGMH said the patient was admitted and cared for in the COVID-19 Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) Unit.

However, the patient died on the first day of admission.

“The Hospital Surveillance Unit and Infection Prevention & Control Unit (IPCU) is in close coordination with the local and regional health authorities in managing this development,” the GCGMH statement read.

Currently, GCGMH is also completing the contact tracing for both first and second-generation contacts of the case.

GCGMH said it has been observing patient cohorting, standard staff quarantine proceedings, and personal protective equipment (PPE) for protection according to the strict infection control protocols set by Hospital Surveillance Unit and Infection Prevention and Control Unit adopted from evidence-based recommendations of the Department of Health and World Health Organization.

It assured the public that being a dedicated COVID-19 Designated Healthcare Facility, GCGMH has been always prepared to handle and contain such a case. ###
