OPINION: Glimmer of Hope

Posted on April 6, 2020

Cancellation of classes, unprecedented disruption of work, looming economic crisis, community quarantine, lockdown of some cities, worldwide cases of infection and soaring number of casualties are just some of the disheartening scenarios experienced not only in the Philippines but also throughout the world. Who would’ve thought that an invisible and miniscule enemy, yet an insidious virus like a thief in the night, can cause all of these?

Affluent or destitute, celebrity or ordinary, prince or mendicant, powerful or powerless are not spared in this contagious disease known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19). It knows no boundaries from first-world countries to third-world countries. Moreover, it spreads like a fire that there’s no way to put it out and cascades like a wave that there’s no time to recede.

Who would’ve known that this crowned- like- virus that started and wreaked havoc in Wuhan, China created a big pandemonium and loss throughout the world? It started as a disease that turned into a pandemic. Fortunately, others have survived but to those the unfortunate ones may turn into ashes that they didn’t have an ample time to kiss, hug and bid farewell to their loved ones.

Adding fuel to this agitated times, this pandemic has no cure yet. Until this moment, the time is ticking fast for the brilliant minds of scientists to find antidote to this dreadful disease.

Despite these detrimental consequences of this ravaging enemy, what can we do to allay our fears? Are there solutions that can lessen and eventually eradicate the cases of this traitorous virus? Are we capable of expressing unity over divisiveness? Can we choose discipline over tolerance? Can we spread love over hatred? Can we show compassion over greed? Can we still profess humanity over inhuman acts? In other words, is still there a glimmer of hope amid all of these?

Definitely, there is still a hope if we join our hearts and mind as one. There is still a glimmer of hope beaconing the dark path of this epochal time in our history if we choose to act as one. Indeed, the virus may resemble like a crown but let’s now allow it to reign all over our land. So, bring it on!
