The Francisco Dagohoy monument in the town of Danao will be among the 21 landmarks that will be lighted up during the 500-day countdown to the 500th Anniversary of the Victory at Mactan.
According to Rene Escalante, vice chairperson of the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) and chairperson of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), these landmarks have a common link and that is its “historical significance”.
The Francisco Dagohoy monument is described in their program as “martyr of freedom”.
Dagohoy, whose real name was Francisco Sendrijas, was a Boholano leader of the longest Philippine revolt on record that lasted for 85 years during the Spanish Era.
Last September, President Rodrigo Duterte has signed Republic Act. No. 11444, an act declaring July 4 of every year as a special working holiday in Bohol to be known as “Francisco Dagohoy Day” in honor of the leader of the Philippines’ longest revolt.
Other landmarks that will be lighted up later are Peace and Unity Monument in Davao City, Rizal National Monument in Manila, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Taguig, Leyte Landing Site in Palo, Higinio Mendoza Monument in Puerto Princesa, Jose Abad Santos Monument in San Fernando, Pampanga, Dambana ng Kagitingan in Pilar, Bataan, Ayuntamiento de Manila in Intramuros, Manila, Balangiga Memorial in Balangiga, Eastern Samar, Gregorio del Pilar Shrine in Tirad Pas, Ilocos Sur, Sta. Barbara Church in Iloilo, Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, Quince Martires Monument in Naga City, Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan, Vigan UNESCO World Heritage Site in Vigan, Kenan Aman Dangat in Basco, Batanes, Sultan Kudarat Monument in Cotabato City, Martyr of Bangkusay in Macabebe, Pampanga, Sheik Karimol Makhdum Mosque on Tawi-Tawi, and Agusan Gold Image Monument in Butuan City.
However, the event today will highlight Lapu-Lapu City.
Tourism Sec. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat will attend the activity in lieu of President Rodrigo Duterte.
She will lead the wreathlaying this afternoon at the Mactan Shrine.
The main event will be held in Lapu-Lapu City Hoops Dome.
According to Eric Divinagracia, the event’s creatives co-director, today’s event will be capped by a cultural show at there where 25 groups from various places in the country will be performing.
Among those slated to perform is the Loboc Children’s Choir. ###
