TAGBILARAN CITY — Bohol has received a “Green Card” from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), allowing the province to retain its Unesco Global Geopark status for another four years.
Gov. Aris Aumentado announced the development on Tuesday, Nov. 4, during the 130th birth anniversary celebration of former President Carlos P. Garcia at the Bohol Cultural Center.
The Unesco Global Geoparks Council unanimously approved the Green Card during its 11th session in Paris, France, following a revalidation mission conducted in Bohol from Aug. 3 to 7, 2026.
The recognition means Bohol has continued to meet Unesco standards in protecting its geological heritage, biodiversity and cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development.
However, the official report and decision will still be submitted to the Unesco Executive Board for formal endorsement and adoption in the first half of 2027.
Aumentado thanked local government units, communities, organizations and various sectors for their collective efforts in protecting and preserving Bohol’s natural and cultural heritage.
The Green Card assessment affirms Bohol’s continuing commitment to conservation, sustainable tourism and community-based development as a Unesco Global Geopark.
Bohol received the designation in May 2023.
