TAGBILARAN CITY — As thousands of Boholanos prepare to observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, Bohol Light Company, Inc. (BLCI) is reminding all consumers to practice strict electrical and fire safety measures to ensure a peaceful and hazard-free Kalag-Kalag 2026.

With many families expected to leave their homes unattended to visit cemeteries or travel to their home provinces, the risk of fire incidents significantly increases. Unattended candles, overloaded electrical outlets, and neglected appliances are among the leading causes of residential fires during this solemn season.

To promote fire prevention and ensure public safety, Bohol Light advises consumers to strictly observe the following safety tips:

• Unplug all non-essential appliances: Before leaving the house for an extended period, unplug TVs, electric fans, computers, and small kitchen appliances. This prevents electrical fires caused by unexpected power fluctuations or overheating.

• Never leave lit candles unattended: Whether at home or in the cemetery, always extinguish candles before going to sleep or leaving the area. Place them on stable, non-combustible surfaces away from curtains, paper, dried leaves, and other flammable materials.

• Avoid octopus connections: Do not overload electrical outlets with too many extension cords or appliances. Overloading can cause wires to overheat and spark, leading to catastrophic electrical fires.

• Inspect electrical wires and cords: Check for exposed, frayed, or damaged wiring in your home. Replace defective cords immediately and ensure that all electrical repairs are handled by a licensed electrician.

• Secure outdoor lighting: If you must leave exterior lights on for security purposes while you are away, ensure that the bulbs and fixtures are weatherproof and functioning properly to avoid short circuits.

• Turn off the main breaker if necessary: If your entire family will be away for several days and no appliances (like refrigerators) need to remain active, consider turning off the main electrical breaker for maximum safety.

“The observance of Undas is a time for peaceful and solemn remembrance of our departed loved ones. We want to ensure that our customers return to safe homes by proactively eliminating fire hazards,” said Bohol Light Management. “Fire prevention is a shared responsibility, and simple steps like unplugging appliances and watching over lit candles can save lives and properties.”

In the event of an electrical emergency, power outage, or sparking wires, consumers are urged to immediately contact the nearest Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) station and report the electrical issue to Bohol Light’s 24/7 customer service hotlines.
