TAGBILARAN CITY — A newborn baby girl wrapped in a blanket was rescued by disaster response personnel after he was found abandoned in a grassy area near a college in Panglao, Bohol, at around 8 a. m. on Monday, Oct. 26.
Personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) immediately responded after receiving a report about the abandoned infant and brought him to the Panglao Rural Health Unit (RHU) for initial medical attention.
The baby, who sustained multiple ant bites, was subsequently transferred to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center (GCGMMC) in Tagbilaran City for further treatment.
Shortly after the rescue, the MDRRMO received another call for assistance. Responders later discovered that the person seeking help was the baby’s mother, an 18-year-old first-year college student renting a boarding house near the area where the infant was found.
The mother, who is a native of Anda, Bohol, is currently receiving medical care at the Panglao RHU.
Authorities also learned that the baby’s father is a graduating Education student at the Bohol Island State University (BISU) Candijay campus. He is also from Anda.
In a radio interview, Panglao Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Cheryniel Nuda said their office had successfully contacted the mother’s parents.
Nuda said the social welfare office was concerned after learning that the family did not have enough money for transportation to Tagbilaran City. The baby’s paternal grandparents were expected to proceed to GCGMMC to assist with the infant’s needs.
However, Nuda clarified that the baby would not automatically be returned to the parents, given the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Once medically cleared for discharge from GCGMMC, the infant will temporarily be placed under the care of the Trinity Childcare Center in Alburquerque, Bohol, while the case undergoes further assessment and the necessary procedures.
Authorities are expected to continue evaluating the case to determine the appropriate arrangements for the baby’s care and protection.
