UBAY, Bohol — A 68-year-old barangay councilor was found dead below an irrigation dike in Ubay, Bohol, on Saturday morning, October 17.

The victim, a resident and councilor of Barangay Pag-asa, was discovered about five to eight feet below the lateral dike of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), according to the initial investigation by Ubay police.

Police said the victim’s companions began looking for him after he left a store to urinate. They later found him lying at the bottom of the dike.

He was taken by ambulance to the Don Emilio del Valle Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival at around 11:05 a.m.

Before the incident, the councilor had been drinking alcoholic beverages with fellow barangay officials and companions following a voluntary dengue-prevention spraying activity.

Municipal Health Officer Dr. Cristel Joy Macas identified cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart muscle, as the cause of death. However, the underlying cause of the condition was not determined.

The medical finding does not establish whether cardiomyopathy contributed to the incident or was related to the fall.

The victim’s family believes his death was accidental and does not suspect foul play. Police are continuing to document the circumstances surrounding the incident.
