TAGBILARAN CITY—A 73-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife died after a vehicle crashed into a parked multicab along the road in San Antonio Village, Barangay Poblacion, Lila, Bohol, at around 5:06 p.m. Saturday.
The fatalities were identified as Clemencio Cahiles and his wife, Emma Cahiles, both residents of Barangay Poblacion, Lila.
Police Master Sergeant Jomarie Villar, investigator of the Lila Police Station, said the couple was on their way down a staircase toward the shoreline to attend their grandchild’s birthday celebration when an Isuzu aluminum van collided with a Suzuki multicab parked along the roadside.
The van was driven by 21-year-old Joebert John Palumera, who was driving for Rev. Fr. Darwin Gitgano, who is currently staying at the Exorcism Center in Barangay Malinao East, Lila.
According to Villar, Palumera admitted that he fell asleep while driving.
The impact pushed the parked multicab toward the couple, causing them to fall toward the shoreline. The multicab then hit a concrete road barrier, which was dislodged and struck Emma, causing her to be pinned underneath.
Emergency responders brought the couple to the Dimiao Municipal Infirmary. Emma was declared dead at the facility.
Clemencio was later transferred to Ramiro Community Hospital, where he died that evening.
Police said a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide and damage to property is set to be filed against Palumera. He remains under the custody of the Lila Police Station.
The family announced that the couple will be laid to rest at the Lila Cemetery on August 14, 2026, at 3 p.m.
