TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — The provincial government of Bohol has placed the province on heightened alert against African Swine Fever (ASF) following the detection of the disease in neighboring Negros Occidental.

Dr. Medalyn Paman, head of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), said Governor Erico Aristotle “Aris” Aumentado is set to issue an Executive Order to further strengthen measures aimed at preventing the entry of ASF into the province.

The move comes after more than 500 pigs reportedly died from ASF in Negros Occidental, prompting Bohol authorities to tighten the monitoring of live pigs and pork-related products entering the province.
Despite the heightened alert, Paman clarified that Bohol will not impose a total ban on the entry of live pigs from other provinces. Instead, authorities will continue the strict enforcement of existing provincial ordinances, regulations, and biosecurity measures.

She said all shipments of live pigs must be accompanied by complete and valid documents and undergo inspection to ensure the animals are free from ASF before they are allowed to enter Bohol.

According to data from the OPV, more than 1,000 pigs are regularly transported to Bohol from Negros. This has prompted authorities to intensify monitoring and coordination at seaports and checkpoints to prevent the possible entry of the disease.

The OPV also urged farmers and hog raisers to strictly observe biosecurity protocols and immediately report any unusual deaths or symptoms of illness among their pigs to help prevent the spread of ASF in the province.
