TAGBILARAN CITY — Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy expressed sadness over the decision of Bishop-elect Gerardo “Jingboy” Saco Jr. to withdraw from his episcopal ordination for the Diocese of Tagbilaran.
Uy said Saco formally communicated his decision to the Holy Father, which has already been accepted through the Papal Nuncio.
“Bishop-elect Gerardo ‘Jingboy’ Saco Jr. has communicated to the Holy Father his decision not to proceed with his episcopal ordination. The Papal Nuncio has informed me that the Holy Father has accepted his decision,” Uy said.
He noted that the development has affected many in the local Church.
“This development has brought sadness to many of us, especially the faithful of the Diocese of Tagbilaran,” he added.
Despite this, Uy underscored respect for Saco’s discernment and decision.
“Nevertheless, we respect Fr. Saco’s decision, trusting that it was made after deep and prayerful discernment. Together with the Boholano people, I assure Fr. Saco of our prayers,” he said.
Uy also called on the faithful to pray for the Church as it awaits a new bishop.
“We also pray for the timely appointment of a new bishop who will lovingly shepherd the Diocese of Tagbilaran,” he said.
Saco has announced that he will no longer proceed with his episcopal ordination scheduled on May 26, 2026, citing a “change of heart” after prayer and discernment.
In an official statement on Tuesday, Saco said his decision came after “much prayer and careful discernment,” adding that it was rooted in a deep awareness of his “human limitations and inadequacies.”
