The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) maintains that a P500 budget can still cover a modest Noche Buena, even as some holiday staples have seen price increases due to higher costs of ingredients, packaging, and labor.
DTI’s latest Noche Buena price guide shows that more than 100 commonly purchased items have retained their prices this year. The agency reiterated its annual message that with careful planning and wise shopping, families can still put together a simple and meaningful Christmas Eve meal without overspending.
The same assurance was given in previous years. In 2022, for instance, DTI promoted a “Noche Buena budget shopping” list worth around P500, which included:
American ham (500g) – P163
Pandesal (250g) – P23.50
Cheese (200g) – P41.75
Pasta (800g) and spaghetti sauce (1kg) – P112
Pork giniling (1/8 kg) – P31.25
Fruit cocktail (822g) and Kremdensada (410ml) – P116.50
According to DTI, this selection was enough to feed a family of four to five — a formula the agency continues to stand by today.
For families aiming for a lean, practical celebration, the P500 target remains challenging but achievable. However, many households may still find the amount tight if they hope to prepare a more traditional Filipino Noche Buena, which typically includes pricier favorites like ham, queso de bola, festive pasta dishes, and desserts.
DTI encourages consumers to compare prices, buy early, and simplify their menus to make the most of their Christmas budget.
