TAGBILARAN CITY – Severe Tropical Storm Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) continues to intensify and may reach super typhoon category as it barrels toward the Visayas, state weather bureau PAGASA warned early Monday, November 3.

As of 4 a.m., Tino was located 430 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 135 kph, moving west-southwest at 30 kph.

Pagasa said Tino is expected to strengthen into a typhoon within the next 12 hours and may make landfall at or near peak intensity over Eastern Samar, Leyte, or Dinagat Islands by late Monday or early Tuesday.

“The possibility of reaching super typhoon category is not ruled out,” Pagasa said, citing rapid intensification scenarios.

Signal No. 2 in parts of Visayas
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 is hoisted over Leyte, Biliran, Southern Leyte, Camotes Islands, and the eastern portion of Bohol—covering Talibon, Trinidad, Ubay, Bien Unido, President Carlos P. Garcia, Mabini, Alicia, Candijay, Guindulman, Anda, San Miguel, Pilar, and Getafe.

These areas may experience gale-force winds and heavy rains within the next 24 hours, posing minor to moderate threats to life and property.

The rest of Bohol and neighboring provinces in the Visayas remain under Signal No. 1, where strong winds and rough seas are expected.

Precautionary measures
Governor Aris Aumentado has suspended classes in all levels in Bohol for Monday as a preemptive measure. Local disaster councils have been placed on heightened alert, particularly in coastal and low-lying communities.

Sea travel remains risky across the eastern seaboards of the Visayas and Mindanao, where waves may reach up to 9 meters high. Pagasa advised mariners and fisherfolk to stay in port until conditions improve.

Tino may exit into the West Philippine Sea by Wednesday after crossing the Visayas and northern Palawan, but it is forecast to remain a typhoon throughout its passage.
