UBAY, BOHOL — The Provincial Government of Bohol, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), reinforced its food security and livelihood initiatives by stocking thousands of fingerlings at the province-owned facility in Ubay on Wednesday, August 20.
Governor Aris Aumentado, together with Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte and Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog, led the release of 5,200 fingerlings—comprising common carp, African catfish, red tilapia, and regular tilapia—into a 5,500-square-meter pond at the Bohol Organic Agriculture Technology (BOATech) Center.
The fingerlings are projected to produce about 4,400 kilos of fish within four months. Once harvested, the fish will be sold at the Capitol through the OPA to ensure affordable supply for Boholano households.
Looking beyond immediate harvests, the provincial government has outlined a plan to establish a hatchery network across Bohol. This long-term strategy is aimed at increasing local fish production, lessening dependence on outside sources, and stabilizing fish prices in the province.
To further diversify food production, OPA has also initiated the planting of Bohol’s native sweet jackfruit variety and cassava at BOATech, underscoring the Capitol’s commitment to climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture.
During the activity, Aumentado also inspected support facilities and equipment, including 130 pump boats intended to strengthen the fisheries sector.
“These initiatives form part of our vision to create climate-smart agri-fishery clusters that not only secure food for every Boholano but also attract sustainable investments to uplift our local economy,” the governor said.
