Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto “Abet” Uy on Monday said delaying the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is a moral offense, stressing that truth and justice must not be set aside for political convenience.
“Let this be clear: calling for the trial to move forward is not a judgment against the Vice President, but a call for the truth to be discerned in the light of justice,” said Uy in a statement.
He said the ” trial must be fair, impartial, and insulated from partisan maneuvering.” He added,” It must be driven not by the desire to destroy a person, but by the commitment to build a nation where no one is above the law.”
He said senators, whatever their affiliations, to be servants of the truth, not of power blocs.” They are called to listen not only to political handlers, but to the conscience of the nation.”
He said proceeding with the trial is a moral obligation.
“Our society is built on trust—trust in the rule of law, trust in the institutions of democracy, and trust that the truth will prevail. If credible accusations are brought forth and yet are dismissed or delayed for political convenience, what message do we send to our people? That power protects its own? That accountability is optional, ” he said.
He said the Senate must rise above public cynicism and internal political alliances.” Failure to act decisively on such a serious matter would contribute to the growing public impression that institutions meant to uphold accountability have become instruments of delay and denial,” he said.
Uy said by allowing the trial to proceed, “the Senate demonstrates its relevance, its dignity, and its independence.”
“Let us not forget: A nation that fears truth has already begun to fall. But a nation that faces the truth—however painful—is a nation on the path to healing,” Uy said.
