Village councilor shot dead in Sierra Bullones on eve of midterm polls

A barangay (village) councilor was shot dead in an altercation during a drinking spree on the eve of the May 12 midterm elections in Sierra Bullones town.

The victim was identified as Ernesto Gacas, 60, and a resident of Purok 4, Sitio Cagyo, Barangay Matin-ao, Sierra Bullones.

The incident happened at 11 p.m.

Investigation said Cagas was having a drinking spree with his neighbor identified as David Digal. They had a heated argument that prompted Digal to shot him in the chest.

Digal fled but also surrendered to the police.

Cagas was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Digal surrended to police at dawn.

Police said that based on further investigation and information from witnesses and neighbors, the victim and suspect had a long-standing personal dispute.

According to the Bohol Police Provincial Office, the said incident was isolated and it would not affect the peace and order of the election.
