Labor leader and senatoriable Ka Leody de Guzman added his name to those imploring that Dutch authorities should reject former presidential spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque’s application for asylum in the Netherlands.
“Hindi dapat bigyan ng asylum ang taong mayroong dapat ipaliwanag sa taumbayan, ang kanyang papel sa pagsulpot at paglaganap ng Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators o POGO lalo pa’t may alegasyon din ng human at sex trafficking,” said De Guzman in a statement sent to the media on Monday.
He adds that, “Mali na sa gobyernong Dutch siya magpapaliwanag kung bakit niya inaakalang pine-persecute siya. Dito siya sa Pilipinas magpaliwanag kung bakit siya hindi dapat managot. Sa atin siya accountable at hindi sa dayuhang gobyerno.”
De Guzman also refuted Roque’s claim of political persecution in his home country. “Persecution ba ang humihingi ng paglilinaw lalo pa’t nasa mataas na posisyon siya sa gobyerno noong termino ni Duterte? Ang mga aktibista, mga lider ng mga kilusang mapagpalaya ang pine-persecute, at hindi ang mga kagaya niya.”
“Matagal nang huminto si Roque ang pagsisilbi sa masa. Ngayon ay nakukuntento na lamang siya sa pagsisilbi sa berdugong amo niya. Matagal na siyang itinakwil ng human rights community sa bansa,” he said.
Before serving as presidential spokesperson in 2017 to 2018 and again in 2020 to 2021, Roque built his reputation as a human rights advocate. He represented the victims of the 2009 Ampatuan massacre, the Malaya Lolas, and the family of the killed transgender Jennifer Laude.
