Joint efforts of students and teachers at Catigbian National High School (CHHS) to mass-produce reusable masks have paid off after they sold 4,785 pieces.
Personnel from the Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Bohol, Bohol Investment Promotion Center (BIPC), Bohol Provincial Employees League (BOPEL) and private individuals purchased the said masks.
These masks were skillfully made by 15 CNHS Tailoring students and 16 teachers after seeing the need for affordable face masks in the province.
Worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) has noted a significant shortage of personal protective equipment, especially for surgical masks.
Felimon Maglajos, the school principal, came up with this plan to also support Executive Order No. 5 or the “Province-Wide Mandatory Use of Face Masks At All Times in All Public Places to intensify the safety measures against COVID-19.
“Initiating a project like this is our way to prevent the spread of this deadly virus that has claimed thousands of lives across the globe,” he stressed.
At the same time, Maglajos said this will become a community livelihood project in the school.
Gemma Asilo, the tailoring teacher, highlighted how this project helps the students earn and at the same time harness their skills.
These students and teachers volunteered their time and effort to come up with this reusable face mask that is made of non- woven (outer) fabric, similar to those used for surgical masks but thicker and Geena silk as the inner lining.
Since some of the materials used for the masks were donated, they were sold at P 9 only.
The proceeds of the sale of these masks have been allotted for the maintenance of the school equipment and labor fee to the students.
To ensure the safety of the students and the teachers, the school secured a medical certificate from the Division of Bohol through Maria Aurora B. Lumaad, MD, MA. Furthermore, the Office of the Governor gave them a permission letter to do the task.
These students and teachers were also instrumental in creating design and costumes used in contests like the “Sandugo Bangga sa Kuradang Competition”, “Kasadya Pasko sa Bohol Dayegon Contest”, and the Belen Contest.
