Senatorial candidate Leody De Guzman called out the reelectionist candidates under the administration’s Alyansa ng Bagong Pilipinas stating that their refusal to perform their constitutionally mandated duty as sitting senators to convene as an impeachment court reeks with opportunism.
He likewise said that the midterm election does not justify their preference for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte to proceed only after the 2025 senatorial elections.
“Gusto nilang maging senador ulit pero ayaw nilang gampanan ang pinaka-kagyat na tungkulin ng pagiging senador,” the labor leader declared.
Among the reelectionist senators backed by the Marcos administration that disregards the urgency in convening the impeachment court are Imee Marcos, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Bong Revilla Jr. and Francis Tolentino.
He added that, “Ang tunay na motibo ng kanilang pag-abandona sa tungkulin ay ayaw nilang ma-isolate sa mga botante sa mga balwarte ng pareho at nagtutunggaling paksyon ng administrasyong Marcos at ni Sara Duterte,”.
De Guzman also cited that this is the case of Representative Camille Villar of Las Pinas and partylist representative Erwin Tulfo who are both gunning for a Senate seat under the admin slate but did not sign the impeachment complaint.
“Hindi natin nakikitaan ng integridad ang mga kandidato ng administrasyon na playing safe dahil ang gusto nila ay manatili sa poder at mapalakas pa ang monopolyo ng kanilang pamilya sa kapangyarihan,” he said.
Public opinion firm WR Numero in a recent survey revealed that 47 percent of their respondents opposed the impeachment, while 33 percent supported it and 20 percent remained undecided. Also, the impeachment was particularly unpopular in Mindanao, with 66 percent of respondents expressing disapproval and 17 percent favoring. Meanwhile, Metro Manila manifested strong support with 48 percent in favor of the impeachment.###
