Bohol Giant Clams Hatchery multi-purpose building inaugurated in Ubay

A new facility to help with propagating and protecting giant clams, also known as “taklobo”, is now ready for use after it was inaugurated on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 17.

Gov. Aris Aumentado and Capitol officials led the blessing and inauguration of the
P4. 6 million Bohol Giant Clams Hatchery multi-purpose building at Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) Multi-species Hatchery in barangay Sinandigan in Ubay town.

Gov. Aris Aumentado said it was a significant environmental achievement.

“Akong nakita nga dako gayod og gahom ang hiniusa nga pagtambayayungay, kay kini ang hinungdan sa padayon nga malampusong pagbarog sa Giant Clams Hatchery bisan taliwala sa daghang pagsulay,” Aumentado said.

“Atong panglantaw nga ang sunod nga henerasyon maksaksi ning maong legasiya
kay kini nag-inusara sa tibuok Region-7,” he added.

The Giant Clams Hatchery started in 2013 with only 200 giant clams brought from Bolinao, Pangasinan, via a Philippine Air Force C-130.

There are 124 adult giant clams and 370 juvenile giant clams in 10 marine protected areas (MPAs) in the province. These are found in Balicasag, Panglao; Bingag, Dauis; Basdio, Guindulman; Badiang, Anda; Lumayag MPA, Baybayon, Mabini; Sinandigan, Ubay; Gaus, Carlos P. Garcia; Cataban, Talibon; Hambungan, Inabanga, and Majingpit, Bonbon, Clarin.

Also present during the event were
BFAR’s Candido Samijon and Antonio Pilotes, DENR’s PENRO Jose Cleo Cary Colis, Bohol Island State University- Candijay Campus Director Luzminda Machete, and CCEF Protect Danajon Coordinator Generoso Madrona.

Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, Chief of Staff Filipina Asoy-Piollo, Sinandigan Barangay Captain Jimmy Dabalos also attended the event.
