The province of Bohol joined the world in the global celebration of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem celebrated every year on July 26.
For this occasion, the provincial government of Bohol, through the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO), conducted a significant tree-growing activity in Barangay Marcelo, Mabini.
Volunteers planted 800 mangrove seedlings and 300 propagules of the Bungalon species (Avicennia Marina).
Around 400 volunteers from various organizations, including BPEMO, the Marcelo Fishermen Association (Mafa), the Bonbon Small Fishermen Association (Bosfa), OJTs from BISU Clarin and Bilar, MAO, MDRRM, RHU, Bantay Dagat, Tarsier 117 Candijay Station, BFP, and all LGU employees of Mabini, led by Mayor Ongie Grace Lim, participated in the event.
According to United Nations Environment Programme, it aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.
This International Day was adopted by the General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in 2015.
