The Pamilacan Watchtower is now officially declared as National Cultural Treasure.

Under RA 10066 or the National Heritage Act of 2009, under which National Cultural Treasure Declarations is authorized, the richness of the Filipino’s history, heritage, identity, and culture is expressed so well in its art and architecture.

The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) turned over a significant marker to Pamilacan Island, in the municipality of Baclayon, on May 23.

The NMP-Bohol has been conducting a series of marker turnovers since last year, but this is the first time it has been conducted on an island.

The Pamilacan Watchtower is considered a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. It is part of the Bohol Watchtowers Collective, designated on August 29, 2011.

Located on the northeast side of the island, this 200-year-old Spanish fortress once served as a watchtower used by the Spaniards to detect intruders such as pirates and adversaries, particularly those approaching from the south.

The event was graced by NMP-Bohol Head Rachelle Lacea, BPTO Head Joanne Pinat, Baclayon Mayor Alvin Uy, Vice Mayor Romulo Balangkig, Pamilacan Barangay Captain Crispo Valleroso, other barangay officials, department heads of LGU Baclayon, and teachers from Pamilacan National High School.

On behalf of the National Museum of the Philippines, NMP-Bohol Head Rachelle Lacea led the ceremonial turnover, highlighting the significance of this event as part of the National Heritage Month (NHM) celebration. Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 439, NHM is celebrated annually in May to foster consciousness, respect, and love for the legacies of Filipino cultural history.

In his acceptance message, Baclayon Mayor Alvin Uy thanked the National Museum of the Philippines for recognizing the Pamilacan Watchtower as a National Cultural Treasure. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Provincial Government under the leadership of Governor Aris Aumentado for its continued support in preserving the culture and heritage of Baclayon.

The Bohol Provincial Tourism Office supports the unveiling ceremony, highlighting its significance as one of the key attractions for tourists on the island. The designation of the Pamilacan Watchtower as a National Cultural Treasure enhances its historical value and promotes cultural tourism, drawing visitors interested in exploring the rich heritage of the island.

There are six watchtowers in Bohol designated as national cultural treasures: the Punta Cruz Watchtower, Dauis Watchtower, Panglao Watchtower, Pamilacan Watchtower, Loay Watchtower, and Balilihan Watchtower.

As a designated UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol promotes conservation, education, and sustainable tourism, ensuring that the province’s rich heritage is celebrated and preserved for future generations. (PIMO/ML)
