4th Ubi cookoff showcases Bohol’s rich flavor, colorful culture

Held at the Bohol Showcase Center on Dec. 5, the 11 teams competed in the homemade category which was divided further in three sub-categories: soup, appetizer and main dish. 

Teams Euthanasia of Tagbilaran City led by Paul Laging; and Maribojoc, with head cook Ritchell Tabel vied for the top prize in the soup subcategory.

Meanwhile; Panglao led by Rhealou Villamor; Eat Bulaga of Balilihan led by Michael Bulaga competed in the appetizer subcategory.

On the other hand, Kusinerong Sigbin of Panglao led by Arnold Quiñal and Buzz’n Food Hub of Tagbilaran with Maricar Madanguit in the lead made it to the final cookoff main dish subcategory.

Meanwhile, eight hotel chefs competed in the dessert category for professionals with Edsel Gulay of Bellevue Resort, Estela Loretche of Henann Resort and Ma. Chevy Therese Tabigue of Mangaon Ta Restaurant emerged as the top three who will go to the finals. 

The winners will be announced and awarded during the closing of the ubi Festival at the Bohol Cultural Center on Dec. 6. 

Eleven teams participated in the ubi (purple yam) cookoff contest held as part of the fourth ubi festival organized by the provincial government through the Bohol Provincial Tourism Office (BPTO).

Gina Kapirig of the BPTO said the ubi cookoff is not only part of the ubi festival but also of the province’s designation as Bohol Island Global Geopark. 

Geofood is one aspect of the province’s geoheritage that features quality and traditional food sourced from and produced by the island, she explained. 

The cook off also coincided with the first international geopark seminar that gathered experts, scholars, and partners for sharing of innovative practices to sustainability. 

This year’s ubi festival has the theme: “Ubi, Hamiling Lagutmon Kaabag sa mga Bol-anon niining Hagit sa Panahon.” (PIMO/LMS)
