The Independence Day celebration took a different turn this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to hound the Philippines.
In Bohol, the commemoration on Friday was held at the New Capitol Building where a few government employees and provincial leaders headed by Bohol Gov. Art Yap were in attendance.
Physical distancing was observed by attendeees who wore face masks.
Other government agencies were also tasked to hold celebrations with limited guests.
A short and simple program was held at the capitol with a video presentation of Bohol and its iniative to prevent the spread of the virus.
Yap said freedoms are very fragile.
“And, I want you all to consider and reflect on this 122nd Independence Day that our freedoms are actually intertwined and joined. I cannot say I want to have a free and happy life in Bohol if our own brothers and sisters are threatened with sickness, hunger, ignorance or poverty. Our freedoms are all intertwined,” he said.
“And, that’s why I ask you on this 122nd day of commemoration to understand that when anyone in Bohol is threatened, when anyone in Bohol is sick, when anyone in Bohol is hungry or cannot go to school or has been denied equal opportunity or discriminated, then all of us are less happy and all of us are less free, ” Yap said.
