President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in Metro Manila from March 10 to 14 amid the threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
He said the purpose of the suspension is to keep the children safe.
The barangay chairmen and policemen were tasked to ensure that children stay at home during the suspension of classes.
Duterte said the country will get through the health emergency.
He declared a state of public health emergency, which can allow the government to declare price freezes for medicine, get additional funding for its response to the coronavirus, and impose a mandatory quarantine.
Some lawmakers have been calling for Metro Manila to be placed on lockdown. However, the Health Department said this may happen if it decides to raise Red Alert Sub-level 2.
