Maribojoc’s Ofamin family named regional model OFW Family

A family from Maribojoc town, Bohol was hailed as the regional winner of Model OFW Family of the Year Award.

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Central Visayas organized the awarding ceremony for the Search for the Model OFW Family of the Year Friday, October 11, 2019, at a hotel in downtown Cebu City.

Among the contenders, Donna Ofamin and her family emerged as the regional winner for the land-based category.

The family also won a special award for outstanding achievement for community projects.

Donna works as domestic worker in Hong Kong, while her husband Rolando mans their nipa palms roofing business of nipa palms roofing to earn additional income.

The Ofamin family is set to represent the Central Visayas region in the national competition, to be held in Manila.

Other finalists from Bohol were Nonato Echavez also of Maribojoc town for sea-based category and
Maria Teresa Garces from Calape town for land-based category.

During the awarding, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella lauded the Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA) which, he said, helps encourage OFW families to value loyalty and unity, and for children of OFW couples to recognise the sacrifice of their parents who work abroad.

The Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA) aims to recognize the outstanding achievements of OFWs and their families and to promote best practices in managing family challenges.

It promotes success stories about the OFW families’ endurance over the challenges on their family relations.

The search highlights the role of the OFW family acting as a group/unit in the attainment of socio-civic, educational, professional and material success.

The criteria of the selection process include Wholesome OFW Family (50 percent); Civic/Community Involvement of OFW and Family (20 percent); Success in OFW and/or Family member/s education or profession (20 percent); and Success in Managing Family Finances (10 percent).
