LOON, Bohol — A six-year-old girl died after she was bitten by a snake in Barangay Canmaag, Loon, Bohol, on Friday.
Initial information showed that the child was fetching water when she was suddenly bitten by a snake locally known as a “banacon.”
The girl was immediately rushed to a medical facility in Loon for treatment. However, because of her condition, she was referred to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center in Tagbilaran City.
She did not survive and died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The incident was not the first reported fatal snake-bite case in Loon. Two years ago, a three-year-old girl also died after being bitten by a snake believed to be the same type.
The latest incident has prompted calls for residents, particularly parents, to remain vigilant in areas where snakes may be present.
Residents are advised to be extra cautious when fetching water, clearing vegetation, walking through tall grass, or entering dark and secluded areas where snakes may hide.
What to do if bitten by a snake
- Seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
- Keep the victim calm and as still as possible to slow the spread of venom.
- Immobilize the bitten limb and keep it still, preferably below heart level.
- Remove rings, bracelets, or tight clothing near the bite because swelling may occur.
- If it can be done safely, take a photo of the snake from a distance to help medical personnel identify it. Do not attempt to catch or kill the snake.
- Do not cut or suck the wound, apply a tourniquet, use ice, or apply herbal remedies.
- Get the victim to the nearest hospital as quickly and safely as possible, where antivenom and other appropriate treatment can be provided.
