TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — A 14-year-old student has been identified as the person who allegedly posted threats against schools in Catigbian and Balilihan, Bohol, prompting authorities to turn the case over to the police and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for appropriate intervention.

Catigbian Mayor Benjie Oliva said local police had identified the person behind the Facebook post threatening schools, including Haguilanan High School in Catigbian and three schools in neighboring Balilihan.

“Thankfully, this will not happen again. Thank God,” Oliva said, while thanking Balilihan Mayor Trisha Chatto and the police forces of Balilihan and Catigbian for their cooperation.

Chatto said on Aug. 22 that the account owner was identified through an investigation by local police and the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group.

The suspect, being a minor, was referred to the PNP and DSWD for case management and appropriate intervention.

Chatto thanked the officials and agencies involved in the investigation, including Oliva, the PNP stations in Balilihan and Catigbian, the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, the Department of Education and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

She also commended barangay officials for immediately responding by strengthening security around schools following the threats.

Chatto reminded young people that threats against the lives of others should never be treated as a joke.

She urged parents and schools to continue monitoring children, particularly as they learn to distinguish right from wrong.

“The actions of children are also a reflection of what they see around them and from the adults who guide them,” Chatto said, calling for stronger advocacy on responsible social media use and positive role modeling.

She appealed for continued cooperation among authorities, schools, parents and communities to guide young people toward responsible behavior and actions.
