CEBU CITY— Political detainee and artist Alvin “Chai” Fortaliza was released from detention after almost seven years in prison, following the posting of cash bail for his remaining case.

Supporters welcomed his freedom with prayers and gratitude, calling it a significant moment for human rights advocates and the artistic community.

Fortaliza’s release was made possible through the collective efforts of legal professionals, donors, paralegals, and volunteers. Among those acknowledged were University of Cebu – College of Law Dean Ria Lidia Espina, lawyer Van Allen Ancero, Cora, and other donors who contributed through various channels.

Assistance also came from the paralegals and volunteers of Karapatan Central Visayas, as well as lawyer Euvic Ferrer of the Commission on Human Rights Region VII (CHR-VII), whose timely intervention was cited as crucial.

Artists’ groups and fellow activists, including SinagBayan and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines – Cebu Chapter, also expressed solidarity and support.

Fortaleza was arrested in March 2019 while campaigning in Guindulman town, Bohol. He was served with a warrant in which he was accused of being an accomplice to two cases of murder.

Fortaliza has already been acquitted in two murder cases previously filed against him. In one case, witnesses did not identify her as among the assailants, while in another, witness testimonies were found to be inconsistent. He remains facing an attempted murder case, a bailable offense, which is still pending in court.

Advocates have described Fortaliza as among the hundreds who allegedly faced fabricated charges during the Duterte administration, asserting that such cases were used to silence dissent and criticism of government policies. While legal proceedings continue, supporters emphasized that her temporary freedom allows her to spend the Christmas season outside prison.

In a message shared with supporters, Fortaliza expressed gratitude and renewed resolve, urging continued advocacy with the words, “Tuloy ang laban!”

Human rights groups said his release serves as both a personal victory and a reminder of the ongoing struggle faced by political detainees across the country.
