TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol — Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the province have surged to 812, with health authorities expressing deep concern over the rapid increase and the rising number of high-risk behaviors linked to the spread of the virus.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Fruserma May Uy said the highest mode of transmission remains male-to-male, followed by males with multiple female partners, and lastly bisexual transmission involving both men and women.

Uy urged couples to be honest and faithful to one another to prevent infection. She stressed that HIV testing and treatment are free, and early treatment can suppress the virus to undetectable levels — significantly reducing the risk of transmission and preventing progression to Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (Aids).

In an interview over dyRD’s Inyong Alagad, Uy emphasized that individuals diagnosed early can live normal lives. She assured the public that all patient information is strictly confidential, and most cases that progress to Aids are those who never got tested or refused treatment.

Based on PHO data, Tagbilaran City recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Ubay and Carmen. However, Uy clarified that the figures do not necessarily mean the patients are residents of those towns; these were the locations where they registered or underwent testing.

Health officials continue to urge the public to visit rural health units (RHUs) for free and accessible HIV testing.

At the same time, authorities noted a rise in prostitution in the province, which may be contributing to the spread of HIV. Current rates are reported as:

Class A: P5,000 and above

Class B: P2,000 – P3,000

Class C: P500 and above

The PHO calls on the community to practice responsible behavior, seek accurate health information, and undergo regular testing to help curb the spread of HIV.
