JAGNA, Bohol — A landslide hit a portion of Mt. Matunog, the highest peak in Bohol, on Tuesday night, November 4, in Barangay Mayana, this town.
Barangay Captain Servando Acas said residents panicked after hearing the rumbling sound of falling rocks around 7 p.m.
No evacuations were ordered, but around 80 houses in Sitio Balikbayan, located about 300 meters from the mountain’s base, are now being closely monitored for possible risks.
Barangay Mayana, an upland village with a population of 2,530 residents, was also the site of a massive landslide in 2005 that damaged 10 houses and 16 farmlots. The 2005 incident affected about 160 hectares or 38 percent of the barangay’s total land area, disrupting portions of the Jagna–Sierra Bullones National Road and nearby farm roads.
Acas said the barangay council is considering a temporary ban on tourist entry to Mt. Matunog as a precautionary measure while authorities assess the stability of the area.
