UBAY, BOHOL – Residents of Tres Reyes Island in Barangay Fatima, Ubay now have 24/7 electricity, following the successful installation and ceremonial switching-on of a ₱30.3-million submarine power cable project funded by the Department of Energy (DOE).
Second District Representative Van-van Aumentado and Governor Aris Aumentado led the ceremonial energization on July 3 at the Tres Reyes Covered Court, joined by BOHECO II officials, local leaders, and residents.
The project includes ₱25.9 million for the submarine cable, ₱3.2 million for distribution lines, and ₱1 million for house wiring. It is part of DOE’s Subsidy Fund Grant Program for 2024, implemented through electric cooperatives like BOHECO II, which identified unenergized communities.
In her message, Congresswoman Aumentado appealed to island residents to protect the cable from damage, especially from illegal and dynamite fishing.
“Please, no illegal fishing, no dynamite fishing,” she stressed, noting that damage to the underwater line could take months to repair.

BOHECO II General Manager Eugenio Tan explained the difficulty of installing and maintaining the cable, and warned that repairing a cut caused by blast fishing would be both costly and time-consuming.
Governor Aumentado, who pushed for the project since his time in Congress, said the energization is a dream come true for the island community. He also revealed that Banacon Island in Bien Unido is next in line to receive submarine electrification.
“This electricity will help boost the local economy and provide livelihood opportunities,” the governor added.
