TAGBILARAN CITY, BOHOL — Amid moments of doubt, silence, and solitude, God’s presence remains — this was the central message of Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)
President Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David as he addressed fellow bishops during a Mass on Tuesday, July 1, at the St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral in Tagbilaran City.
Cardinal David urged Church leaders to remain steadfast in faith, especially during times of struggle and uncertainty. His reflection on discipleship and leadership struck a chord with attendees, particularly in Bohol, a province deeply rooted in Catholic faith and tradition.
“We must not let our hearts turn into stone when temptations arise,” he said. “Instead of looking back, look to Jesus who is always with us — even in silence.”
“Sometimes we feel alone, but we are never truly alone. God is with us, even in silence,” Cardinal David added, offering reassurance to both clergy and lay faithful navigating personal or pastoral trials.
The homily was part of the ongoing 130th Retreat and Plenary Assembly of the CBCP — a landmark event that brought together more than 80 bishops and over 100 Synodal delegates, including priests, consecrated persons, and laypeople, for a week of spiritual renewal in Bohol.
The retreat aims to foster deeper reflection, communal discernment, and preparation for the upcoming CBCP Plenary Assembly to be held in the neighboring Diocese of Talibon from July 5 to 7.
Church leaders have emphasized the significance of the gathering, both spiritually and historically, as it marks the first time such a retreat is being held outside the traditional plenary setting — and in a province known for its centuries-old churches and enduring Catholic heritage.
