Mayor Jane Yap on 459th Sandugo: ‘it defines us – a people known for its inherent friendliness’

Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap on Saturday said that the blood compact that happened 459 years ago has defined the Tagbilaranons “a people known for its inherent friendliness.”

“This historical milestone holds a pivotal place in our collective history, symbolizing not only a crucial moment in time but also shaping the very essence of who we are as Boholanos. This first international treaty of friendship underscores the enduring qualities that define us – a people known for its inherent friendliness,” said Yap in her message during the 459th Blood Compact Anniversary and Saulog 2024 launching.

The blood compact between Bol-anon Datu Sikatuna and Spanish General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi took place on March 16, 1565.

Saturday’s event also relaunched the Blood Compact site.

The National Museum of the Philippines – Bohol together with the Tagbilaran City Government unveiled the Important Cultural Property marker of the sculpture of the Sandugo created by Boholano National Artist Napoleon Abueva.

The sculpture officially stands in the newly launched Tagbilaran Friendship Park and Dejaresco Cultural Amphitheater in Bool, Tagbilaran City.

Another significant milestone as the unveiling of the marker of the Atty. Zoilo Dejaresco Jr. Friendship Park Amphitheatre, named in honor of the late editor-publisher of the Bohol Chronicle.

Dejaresco’ visionary leadership paved the way for the creation of the Tagbilaran City Friendship Park, synonymous with the annual Saulog Tagbilaran festivities.

Yap said it was envisioned to be a hub for tourism in the months ahead.

This year’s Saulog Festival will showcase the finest offerings of our city in terms of entertainment, cuisine, and culture which Saulog Tagbilaran has always been known for.  

“We have curated an exciting lineup of events, performances, and activities that will highlight the best of Tagbilaran and its people. From the vibrant street dancing to the melodious Himog Huni, from the prestigious Mutya sa Tagbilaran to the dazzling Festival King and Queen, from the delectable Kumbira sa Tagbilaran and Tagbo sa Tagbi Bazaar to the nightly entertainment, from thrilling sports activities to lively street parties, from  fun runs to Maoy sa Mayo, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy, ” said Yap.

The young mayor said that amidst the many acitivities, the people should always remember that ” Saulog Tagbilaran is also a celebration of faith. “

” This serves as our humble offering of thanksgiving to our patron saint, Sr. San Jose. It is a heartfelt expression of gratitude for the gift of life and the blessings bestowed upon us throughout the year, with a fervent hope that this year will be filled with even greater prosperity for all, ” said Yap.

Miss Tagbilaran 2024 candidates were also presented to the public.

Present during the event were former Tagbilaran City Mayor Baba Yap, Vice Mayor Adam Jala, Aster Caberte who respresented Gov. Aris Aumentado, laywr Glenn Anino who represented Vice Gov. Victor Balite, lawyer Abel Damalerio who represented Rep. Edgar Chatto, lawyer Handel Lagunay, Bishop Abet Uy, Board Member Benjie Arcamo, Rachelle Lacea of the National Museum of the Philippines-Bohol, Judilyn Quiachon of Department of Tourism and Dejaresco family.
