The Philippine journalism community mourns the loss of veteran broadcaster Miguel ‘Mike’ Enriquez, who passed away on Tuesday, aged 71.

Mel Tiangco and Vicky Morales could not help their tears as “24 Oras” reported the death of Mike Enriquez on Tuesday.

Mel’s voice broke with emotion as she announced the passing of her long-time colleague as anchor of GMA’s flagship newscast.

She took a quick moment to gather herself and rallied to finish reading the GMA Network statement on Mike’s death.

Mel was seen wiping her tears after the segment.

Meanwhile, Vicky voiced the tribute for Mike’s career and the legacy he leaves in the broadcasting industry.

Mel loudly applauded Mike after the video and began the closing spiel for “24 Oras.”

Vicky followed, but her composure cracked and she also had to take a moment to finish her lines. Emil Sumangil wrapped up the spiel.

Mel and Vicky comforted each other as the newscast ended.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN anchors expressed their sympathy to the Kapuso family following the death of Enriquez.

Noli De Castro, Bernadette Sembrano, and Henry Omaga-Diaz reported about Enriquez’s death in the Aug. 29 segment of TV Patrol.

“Nakikiramay po ang TV Patrol at ABS-CBN sa pamilya ni Mike Enriquez,” De Castro said.

“Isa nanamang malungkot na balita sa isang haligi ng pamamahayag sa ating bansa,” Omaga-Diaz added.

“Condolence po sa lahat ng mga Kapuso,” Sembrano said.

De Castro looked back on the times he crossed paths with Enriquez on live coverages. “Nakikiramay po kami. Matagal-tagal din kaming naging magkaibigan ni Mike. Lagi kaming nagkakasabay sa mga live, basta may malalaking live, nagkakasabay pa kami.”

On Facebook , netizens applauded their grace and professionalism while reporting amid their feelings of grief.

Mike battled with a kidney disease. He took a medical leave in December 2021 to get a kidney transplant and returned to work for the 2022 election coverage.

Aside from “24 Oras,” Mike hosted long-time GMA Public Affairs program “Imbestigador” and anchored DZBB’s “Super Balita sa Umaga” and “Saksi sa Dobol B.”

He also served as President of RGMA Network, Inc. and GMA Network’s Senior Vice President and Consultant for Radio Operations. (GMA and ABS-CBN)
