The Diocese of Tagbilaran in Bohol province held the “episcopal coronation” of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion (Our Lady of Assumption), the patroness of Dauis town on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Archbishop Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, led the crowning of the Marian image at the Our Lady of Assumption Church Shrine in time for the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary that day.

Many devotees gathered to witness the ceremony, saying they believed that their patroness is taking care of them with her “maternal love.”

A canonical or pontifical coronation was the first ever Canonical Coronation of a Marian Image in the Diocese of Tagbilaran and in the entire province of Bohol.

A canonical coronation is a pious institutional act, in which the Pope designates a crown or stellar halo to be added to a Marian image under a specific devotional title in a particular diocese.

Pope Francis has granted the petition for canonical coronation to the old miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion (The Assumption of Our Lady) through a decree from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Vatican City on March 28, 2022.

On Monday, August 14, the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) – Bohol together with the Diocese of Tagbilaran spearheaded the ceremonial turnover and acceptance of the new marker of National Cultural Treasure of the National Museum of the Philippines of the Shrine-Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Complex.

Atty. Ma. Cecilia Tirol, director of the Visayas National Museums officially handed the certificate of turnover to the Most Rev. Alberto Uy, Bishop of Tagbilaran.

It was graced by Archbishop Brown.

Rev. Fr. Jose Sinforiano Monton, Parish Priest, Gov. Aris Aumentado, and Dauis Mayor Roman Bullen also served as witnesses.
