The Ischaemic heart diseases though they’re non-communicable are considered as the number one in the top ten causes of mortality among the people, according to Dr. Jesson Butcon, advisor, Health Systems Integration and Strengthening.
And the acute respiratory infection is the number one in top ten causes in terms of morbidity.
“More than four out of five CVD deaths are due to heart attacks and strokes, and one third of these deaths occur prematurely in people under 70 years of age. The most important behavioral risk factors of heart disease and stroke are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol,” World Health Organization (WHO) said.
Butcon, one of the resource persons in the orientation of local chief executives (LCEs) and city/municipal health officers on local health system and universal health care, did not give figures on how many deaths triggered by the disease, particularly in Central Visayas.
Governor Aris Aumentado, who graced the one-day forum held at the new Capitol on October 14, 2022, said that health care is one of his administration’s priorities and thanked the Department of Health (DOH 7) thru regional director Dr. Jaime Bernadas (who also gave his message), municipal mayors and health officials for participating in the said activity.
The disease is followed by (2) cardiovascular, (3) identified Covid-19, (4) malignant neoplasms, (5) diabetis mellitus, (6) hypertension diseases, (7) pneumonia, (8) unidentified Covid-19, (9) other heart diseases and (10) chronic lower respiratory diseases, Butcon said in power point presentation.
The identified Covid-19, pneumonia and unidentified Covid-19 are considered as communicable and the rest non-communicable illnesses in terms of mortality.
The hypertension as number two in morbidity followed acute respiratory infection, (3) animal bites, (4) acute lower tract respiratory infection, (5) urinary tract infection, (6) skin diseases, (7) influenza-like illness, (8) all forms of tuberculosis (TB), (9) acute watery diarrhea and (10) acute febrile illness.
Of the ten diseases in terms of morbidity, only the hypertension is non-communicable disease, the rest communicable.
Butcon presented to the audience the KonSulta oa one of the approaches in the primary care providers network (PCPN) in service delivery capacity for integrated primary health care.
PCPN includes primary care facilities, urban health centers, private outpatient clinics and ancillary services, such pharmacies, laboratories and imaging.
As this developed, DOH also presented how to determine, or determinants of, the people’s health.
Socio-economic is one major in four determinants in people’s health at 40%. Education, job status, family/social support, income and community safety contributes to this score.
The next is health behavior, such as tobacco and alcohol use, diet/exercise, sexual activity, contributes 30% in the people’s health condition.
Heath care is placed at 20% in population’s state of health with access to health services and quality of care, DOH said. And physical environment at 15%.
DOH said that the critical role of the health care provider is “to keep Filipinos healthy and health literate and taking care of them when they need it.
Also present during the orientation were Congresswoman Alexie B. Tutor (3rd district), Atty. Abeleon Damalerio, who represented Congressman Edgar Chatto and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reymoses Cabagnot.
Meanwhile, Aumentado has reorganized the Provincial Health Board (PHB) to improve more health care services in Bohol by issuing Executive Order No. 38 on September 28, 2022 to this effect.
PHB is tasked to provide equitable, sustainable and quality health services to all especially the poor and marginalized. It also serves as the recommendatory or advisory body to the governor and the provincial board now chaired by Vice-Gov. Dionisio Victor A. Balite. (rvo)
