A crew member was found dead while 15 others survived after a RoRo passenger ship listed on its starboard side in Ormoc City, Leyte on Saturday night.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) identified the fatality as Raquel Alo, 33, of Balilihan town in Bohol province, who died during the incident.

Alo, the ship’s purser, was reportedly trapped inside the vessel.

The victim’s body was found before dawn under several cargoes carried by the MV Lite Ferry 3, the PCG said.

“Danilo Lines Inc. regret to announce that one of its vessels, M/V Lite Ferry 3, encountered an incident at the Port of Ormoc City moments after its arrival at the said port. At the moment, the vessel is partially submerged in the water,” reads a statement that was posted on the Facebook page of Lite Shipping Corporation – Lite Ferries.

“The company, together with the Philippine Coast Guard is still trying to investigate the cause of the incident,” it added.

Luckily, “there were no passengers on board the vessel but was loaded with cargo.”

The vessel left Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City for Ormoc City Friday night, Sept. 24.

Meanwhile, the 15 crew members rescued were turned over to the Ormoc City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) for medical assistance, the PCG said.

The Coast Guard added that they have advised the captain of the vessel to file a marine protest.
