A lightning strike triggered the partial system blackout in the power grid in the Visayas, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Ma. Rosette Martinez, NGCP’s Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Lead Specialist, told reporters that this was the initial finding of their team.

The said incident caused “the simultaneous tripping of the Colon-Cebu 138kV Lines 1, 2, and 3 and Colon-Quiot 138kV Line”.

This unscheduled power interruption affected parts of Cebu, Bohol, and Leyte-Samar areas at 11:56 pm on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021.

“Gradual restoration of power transmission services to affected power customers of NGCP started in Cebu at 12:52 AM, while the last feeder energized in Leyte-Samar was at 5:46 AM, and in Bohol, at 5:48AM,” Martinez said.

NGCP is still expediting the re-energization of its Isabel Substation as of this writing.
